The Best Pineapple Cake, EVER
We went to Taiwan for the weekend and it was the most amazing experience. Mostly for the awesome food and the fact that people are SO FREAKING NICE there.
Everyone is sweet, well-mannered and very soft-spoken. Nearly everyone smiled, apologized (even when it was our fault!) and the most amazing part: CARS YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS! (and don’t honk, might I add)
Anyway, I’ll write more about our experience there later. I’m too stuffed from an entire weekend of eating about nine meals a day. I gained 1.5 kg from the trip, which was sadly a relief. Why you ask? Because I thought I gained about 5 kg from all the food I’ve been eating. Guess that means I’ll be running again.
If you find yourself in Taipei and you fancy yourself some delicious sweets. You must go to Taipei Leechi and get their pineapple cakes, which are famous in Taiwan. We got a box for ourself and few others for the hubs coworkers and I wish we had gotten more. I’ve had my fair share of Pineapple cakes from all over Taiwan and this is by far my favorite one.
I also tried their sun cake, which has a “caramel” like filling. It’s a flakey pastry and is slightly sweet… terribly messy to eat but extremely delicious! It kind of reminds me of the “wife cake” that I had in Hong Kong but the filling is different and it isn’t as dense as the HK variety.
Tapei Leechi is famous for their mung bean cakes. I haven’t tried it but I will the next time I’m in Taipei.
Do you guys have a favorite brand of pineapple cakes?
Taipei Leechi and Sunny Hills brands are my favorite pineapple cakes. And I’m going to have to say that Taipei Leechi edges out Sunny Hills! Sunny Hills can also be found in Shanghai, if you crave some… go get some!
And if you want to give them as gifts, keep in mind that they are only good for two weeks. I wanted to get some for friends and send them but the shipping costs + the two week limit sounded like more trouble than they are worth.
But be warned: It’s extremely delicious and hard to share. (Well, for me because I want them all!)
